Frugal & Greenish with envy!
Saturday, October 25th, 2008I have always resisted Facebook. Not enough time, not sure what all the fuss is about etc..
However, I did set up an account a year ago and left it at that- never logged in and never checked it until I received an e-mail message through facebook from an old school friend, who I haven’t seen for over 20 years. So I logged in to facebook and we briefly caught up..While I was there I accepted friend requests from family in Australia and friends in NS & UK .
Earlier today I logged in again and a friend of mine (AJ) who lives in Annapolis, popped up online for a chat. We caught up with our lives as it had been a while since we last talked. Being nosey I browsed his photo album while chatting until I came across THIS!!

AJ moved from the UK with his hubby Matt (who now works at Acadia University) to make a lifestyle change away from their urban lives in the City of Leed. AJ went back to school here in NS at Truro NSCC and graduated with honours from Agriculture College and has since gone on to set up his own small business, Earthen Pathways, undertaking landscaping design work..
Last time I was at AJ’s house he told me of his plans for a greenhouse- somewhere to elongate the growing season, maybe grow a few niche crops etc. I had plans too for a greenhouse too…
For me its never happened so I was happy (but maybe a little envious) seeing AJ’s enormous erection (yes I am aware how that must sound- just bog off) staring out at me from the pages of facebook..
Congrats on the new greenhouse guys! You’ve done a great job!!

Frugal & Greenish – The power of the wind
Friday, October 24th, 2008I’ll be posting a short video most days of a little cruise we took one afternoon/evening late summer on our 32ft sail boat TRYST. Note how peaceful everything sounds as soon as we turn the engine off as we take her out of the harbour, just the wind in our sails and that’s how I like it…

Frugal & Greenish- Thanksgiving Veggie Meatloaf
Monday, October 13th, 2008Happy Thanksgiving!
Nearly half the people in our family are vegetarian and it seems so unfair that my daughter in particular should miss out on a special main part of the meal…she enjoys the glazed carrots and parsnips, roast potatoes, stuffing balls and veggie gravy but there isn’t anything special and central to her meal..
So…with trepidation I attempted a veggie meatloaf today- completely my own recipe and kept my fingers crossed as the pleasant smells permeated the kitchen. Once it had cooled slightly we sampled a little and I have to say it is extremely yummy..infact downright tasty!
BEST EVER VEGETARIAN MEATLOAF
Ingredients
- 1 cup of dried split green peas
- 1 cup of cheese
- 1 cup of quick cook oats
- 3/4 cup of spaghetti sauce (I used zesty no name in a tin)
- 1 small strong onion
- 1 egg beaten
- large pinch of dried basil
- large pinch dried parsley
- 2 cloves fresh garlic
- salt & black pepper
- water
Method
- Place 1 cup of dried split peas into 2 cups of salted boiling water in pan.
- Chop up two cloves garlic finely and add
- Bring back to boil and reduce to medium and continue cooking for 30- 40 minutes (top up with water as necessary)
- After the peas have been cooking for 30-40 minutes drain and return to pan and partially mash
- Set to one side..
- Get large mixing bowl
- Add in 1 cup of quick oats
- Add in 1 cup of grated cheese
- Add in 1 finely chopped onion
- Finally add in partially mashed split peas and mix together
- Get small mixing container
- Add in 3/4 cup spaghetti sauce
- mix in herbs, salt and pepper
- mix in dash chilli sauce (if you like)
- mix in beaten egg
- mix together and then add to large bowl of mixture.
- When thoroughly mixed scrape into meatloaf tin lined with parchment paper
- press down and smooth top
Place into pre heated over at 350 F or 175 C for around 40 minutes.
Once cooked remove from oven and place tin on wire rack to cool for 15 minutes before removing meatloaf with parchment
paper.
When cooled you can slice.
MORE FRUGAL FURNITURE
Anyone who knows me and has seen inside our little messy house, can see it is a hodge podge of unstylishness..
However, despite this fact (I don’t give a damn) we continue to be proud of the fact that all our main living room furniture has been acquired for free through Freecycle or donation or handmade out of the most curious items such as pallet wood, tins etc..
BUT the other day we bought our first piece of furniture for our sitting room and purchased a much needed antique storage corner type chest on legs from Janna, a work colleague for a mere $25… solid wood, mellow patina, soft edges and dovetail joints and all for 25 bucks!
You can’t beat good quality!
