Frugal and Greenish- Annapolis and two lovely guys

Final Day – Sunday
Final weigh in coming Monday

Today was another great day! Not because it was the last day of my 7 day fat burning soup diet (and no I won’t be rushing out to stuff my face with M&M’s Carrot cake although that is very tempting) but because I went to see some dear friends in Annapolis Valley who I hadn’t seen for nearly two years..

It was GREAT to catch up with Matt & AJ again. They live in a lovely old house in Paradise (Yes thats right- its true- the place is called Paradise!). I was keen to see the garden, new greenhouse, chickens and of course the lovely, scrummy guys themselves!

Oh it was with a twinge of envy I wondered around their homestead. There were various grape varieties planted waiting to come forth in 2009 to supply their first grape harvest, raspberry canes under a fruit cage waiting for next year, garlic, herbs, potatoes and other veggies and then of course there was the massive GREENHOUSE….what a wonderful place they would have to grow winter crops or to start seedlings off next year…
And then there were the chickens, Lenin, Stalin and their harem of fluffy bottomed ladies. It had been 5 years since we kept chickens and seeing the chooks made me realize just how much I missed home farming…

I was just relieved they didn’t have a goat (my most favourite animal in the whole wide world- we had several before coming to Canada and I milked two by hand day and night for our dairy needs)

All too soon it was time to go home. Adrian was extremeley generous (seeing as I had drunk two boxes of English tea bags that I had been given for them….I did hold out for over a year but one day I opened a box and took one out and then couldn’t stop) and loaded me down with

  • homemade wine
  • homemade beer
  • homemade quince jelly
  • homemade cherry jelly from their own tree

and they also sent me away with the lingering smell of Joss Sticks in my hair which I sniffed periodically throughout the rest of the day. It would be a shame to wash my hair in the morning…

I’ll post a photo of the goodies tomorrow!

Thanks Matt & AJ – you are the best!

Frugal and Greenish- Day 5 and 6

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Day 6

I loved day 6!! As someone who would rather eat veggies than meat, if I had to choose, it was queer that I couldn’t wait for unlimited steaks on todays menu. I had three medium rare sirloin steaks with a mound full of broccoli and sliced tomato. I think if we listen to our bodies they tell us what we need….this 7 day diet seems to be low in carbs so maybe this causes a craving for protein- who knows!

WARNING: I googled the 7 day fat burning soup diet and found out that it is a variation on the cabbage soup diet. Despite it claiming to be a diet used in a hospital prior to surgery for overweight patients to lose weight, this claim is unfounded and infact ‘Sacred Hearts’ deny all knowledge of using this plan.

BUT my own personal thoughts have been, I have no medical issues, am fairly healthy despite being obese and its only for 7 days- give it a go and kick start some quick weight-loss to increase motivation.

Foods consumed today

  • 3 steaks
  • large plate of broccoli and sliced tomatoes
  • 3 bowls soup
  • 3 clementines
  • 1 apple
  • 2 black coffees (fresh)
  • lots of water

Day 5

Weigh in on work scales 316 lb

Weight lost in 4 days = 9lb

I never thought I would look forward to a steak so much!

Today on the plan I can have a large steak and I plan to have this with a large salad in addition to fruit and soup all day

Update – Food consumed today

  • 5 clementines
  • 2 large bowls of fat burning soup
  • 6 fresh tomatoes
  • large iceburg lettuce
  • 1 large beef sirloin steak fried in the pan
  • lots of water

Frugal & Greenish- Day 4 of fat burning soup

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Day 4

Yay! It was banana and milk day!

The plan says to drink as much skimmed milk as you like today, eat three bananas and have the soup. I am seriously pushing this 7 day plan to its limit as I really want to find out if eating more loses more…This sounds bizzare (and crazy) but there are times, over the years, I have eaten very little to try and lose weight and it has crept off ever-so slowly (1lb or so a week). Maybe feeding the body regularly with generous quantities of healthy foods really does encourage weightloss?

Food consumed today

  • 3 large bananas
  • 2 litres of skimmed milk
  • 3 oranges
  • 2 huge bowls of fat burning soup
  • lots of water

I don’t normally count calories but out of interest I JUST HAD to do it… by my calculations the above has come to around 1800 – 2000 cals.

Kim asked me at work today how I was doing and it was so nice to say that I had stuck to it 100%. On Monday will be the 7 day weigh in and I really am very curious to see if its worked….the 2 day weigh in was very encouraging….please please please let me have ‘dumped some junk’ (hopefully a lot of it) by Monday- I think this would be the incentive to keep going!

PS It’s was a killer cooking beef stroganoff for Chippy (David my hairy man) last night- the cream glooping into the pan, the browned fried beef juices lifting and mingling, the pleasant fresh garlic aroma….I love my food!

Frugal & Greenish- The toilet gets a bravery award

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Day 3 (Wednesday)
Weigh in 319lb
Weight loss in 2 days = 6lb

Wow! Wasn’t expecting that in just two days (see I wasn’t fibbing about needing an industrial sized toilet). I have decided that if I lose 10lb or more in these 7 days then the toilet deserves a bravery award for going beyond the call of duty..I already comforted poor old loo before I sat on it this morning.

Food consumed today
4 apples
3 oranges
huge bowl of broccoli and sliced tomato
large tin of pineapple
large bowl of fat burning soup x 2
2 large plates of salad
lots of water
( I was looking forward to watermelon today but just couldn’t force it down)

Tomorrow I have the luxury of bananas and as much skim milk as I can drink (oh and of course as much soup as I want too)

Can I REALLY lose 10-17lbs (of retained water and blubber) in one week?

Frugal & Greenish- Day 2 – poor septic tank

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Day 2
Thank goodness today I was at home and within spitting distance of an industrial strength toilet. I thank the stars that our septic tank was hungry as after a day of eating fruit followed by an evening of several bowls of ‘fat burning soup’ it had to be the worst experience of its reclusive underground life.

Anyone who tries to reduce weight or flushes their system now and again will know that all too familiar feeling, that kicks in after 12 hours….
a) severe clenching of the uterine region trying to hold back a bladder that feels as heavy as a grapefruit
followed by
b) a mad rush to the washroom trampling children and dogs if they happen to be in the way of your dash path
c) an very audible AHHHHH as a sound like a Tsunami/ White Water Rapids seeps from the bathroom much to the distress of children and dogs picking themselves up off the floor..
d) and not forgetting the obligatory and very loud fart (yes things are hotting up for later on after all the fat burning soup contains a lot of green vegetables)

A mad bad headache ( let me eat cake!)

Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to go COLD TURKEY on drinking coffee.

Suddenly not eating foods or drinking beverages laden with chemicals, refined sugar, salts, fat, dairy and caffeine (oh yes and alcohol) gave me the most hideous headache for about 16 hours.. I almost convinced myself that this diet must be BAD for my health and briefly gave consideration to grabbing a box of ‘lemon cake mix’ out of the cupboard, mixing it up and eating it raw from the bowl before cooking it….

BUT- luckily the will power won over and I ate yet another bowl of soup, and another and by 1pm the WOK full of ‘fat burning soup’ had finally disappeared. Good job I was able to have a big baked potato later on (with a salad) and that was yummy..

Frugal & Greenish- Fat burning and becoming chemical freeish

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I LOVE putting things to the test- pushing stuff to the boundaries to REALLY see if they work so when Kim sent me the 7 day fat burning soup diet with claims that ‘the-more-you-eat-the-more-you-lose’ I jumped at the opportunity of

a) Losing weight quickly
b) Eating lots of food
c) Putting something to the test and trying to prove a theory wrong (overweight people following the diet 100% can expect to lose between 10-17lb in 7 days)
d) Cleansing my body of food additives & dubious chemicals found in many processed and convenience foods

Day 1
Weight 325lb (on scales at work fully dressed wearing shoes)
Today wasn’t so bad. The hardest thing was breaking my habit of strong fresh coffee with cream on the hour (every hour)…this helps me focus on my lap top screen for prolonged periods of time….without it I have trouble reading a sentence let alone typing one!
It felt weird eating fruit for breakfast and devastating not to have something stodgy and italiany for lunch but I looked forward to making up the sooper dooper fat burning soup that evening and in the end the recipe made up a whole WOK full- I guessed this would last me a few days….ermmmm.

Frugal & Greenish- Lots of greenish vegetables in a bid to lose weight.

Monday, November 10th, 2008

* haven’t forgotten about Halloween Clip- coming shortly!* Kim e-mailed me a 7 day fat burning soup recipe. Today is day 1. After losing over 20 lb successfully  it’s been dis heartening to see it creeping back on steadily at 2lb a week….this weekend has been the pits ( continually stuffing my face!) so receiving an e-mail from a work colleague (Kim) on saturday was very well timed… She had found a ‘fat burning soup recipe’ and 7 day eating plan incorporating the soup recipe. It’s supposedly to promote rapid weightloss & cleansing for overweight patients prior to surgery (and it looks healthy enough for 7 days) so I’d like to test out its claims of losing 10-17lb in 7 days (for overweight people).. Here it is…

BASIC FAT-BURNING SOUP

This diet is derived from one given at the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital for overweight heart patients to lose weight rapidly, usually before surgery. Modifications have been added by Ed Kasper L.Ac, Acupuncturist and Herbalist. expect to lose 10-17 pounds in one week. Kombu (seaweed) and Shitake Mushrooms are available in the oriental section of most markets. We do not make any recommendations or variations on this diet and it is meant only to be used for the seven days and to help prepare one to lose weight safely before surgery. It is not meant for long term or repeated use.

Ingredients:

large green onions 1-2 pounds of sliced tomatoes

Kombu Seaweed large piece Garlic 4 cloves

large red onion 2 green peppers

large head of cabbage 1 bunch celery

1 hot pepper (your choice) shitake mushrooms

plenty of fresh pure clean water Soup Stock: Chicken, beef, Pork or Vegetable

spices for flavoring added last 20 minutes and simmered

rosemary sage parsley tarragon thyme

7 day Diet

1. All fruits except bananas, un-sweetened tea, cranberry juice, or water.

2. All vegetables and big baked potato an butter

3. Eat all soup, fruits and vegetables you want

4. Bananas and skim milk.

5. Beef or lamb and tomatoes. substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb or aduki beans, chicken or fish.

6. Beef or lamb & vegetables. substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb or aduki beans, chicken or fish.

7. Brown rice, un-sweetened fruit and vegetables.

Cut vegetables in small to medium pieces, sauté in olive oil & cover with water. Boil fast for 10 (ten) minutes. Cut to simmer & continue cooking until vegetables are tender. This soup can be eaten any time you are hungry. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want. This soup will not add calories. The more you eat, the more you will lose. Fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day. If eaten alone for indefinite periods, you would suffer from malnutrition. Drink plenty of fresh pure water all day. Drink 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water. If you weigh 100 pounds then drink 50 ounces of water.

DAY ONE: All fruits except bananas. Cantaloupe and watermelon are lower in calories than most fruits. Eat only the soup and fruits. For drinks – unsweetened tea, cranberry juice, or water.

DAY TWO: All vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed with all the fresh, raw or canned vegetables. Try to eat leafy vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat along with the soup. At dinner time on this day, reward yourself with a big baked potato an butter. Do not eat any fruits.

DAY THREE: Eat all soup, fruits and vegetables you want. Do not have a baked potato. If you have eaten for three days, as above, and have not cheated, you will find you have lost 5-7 pounds.

DAY FOUR: Bananas and skim milk. Eat as many as 3 bananas and drink as many glasses of milk as you can on this day along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates and so is the milk, but on this particular day your body will need the potassium and the carbohydrates, proteins and calcium to lessen your craving for sweets.

DAY FIVE: Beef or lamb and tomatoes. Try to select high quality range fed animal protein free of antibiotics or hormones. You may have 10-20 ounces of beef or lamb and a can of tomatoes or as many as 6 fresh tomatoes on this day. Try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water this day to wash away the uric acid in your body. Eat the soup at least once this day. You can substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb or aduki beans, chicken or fish.

DAY SIX: Beef or lamb & vegetables. Eat to your heartʼs content of the beef or lamb and vegetables this day. You can have two or three steaks if you like, with green leafy vegetables, but no baked potato. Be sure and eat the soup at least once today. You can substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb or aduki beans, chicken or fish.

DAY SEVEN: Brown rice, un-sweetened fruit and vegetables. Again, stuff yourself. Be sure to have the soup at least once today.

By the end of the seventh day, if you have not cheated on the diet, you will have lost 10-17 pounds. If you have lost more than 15 pounds, stay off the diet for two days before resuming the diet again for day one.

This seven-day eating plan can be used as often as you like. As a matter of fact, if correctly followed, it will clean your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being as never before. After only seven days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 lbs., and possibly 17. Having an abundance of energy continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference. This diet is fast, fat burning and the secret is that you will burn no more calories than you take in. It will flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. This diet does not lend itself to drinking alcoholic beverages at any time because of the removal for fat buildup in your system. Go off the diet at least 24 hours before intake of alcohol.

Because everyoneʼs digestive system is different, this diet will affect everyone differently. After day three, you will have more energy than when you began, if you did not cheat. After being on the diet for several days, you will find your bowel movements have changed – eat a cup o bran or fiber. Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find that you donʼt need the caffeine after the third day.

DEFINITE NO-NOʼS – BREAD, ALCOHOL, CARBONATED DRINKS INCLUDING DIET DRINKS.

STICK WITH WATER, UN-SWEETENED TEA, BLACK COFFEE, UN-SWEETENED FRUIT JUICES, CRANBERRY JUICE AND SKIMMED MILK.

The basic fat-burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry. Eat as much as you wish. Remember, the more you eat, the more you will lose. No fried foods or bread. You can eat broiled chicken (absolutely no skin) instead of beef. Vegetarians can use aduki or mung beans, seitan. Any prescribed medication will not hurt you on this diet. Continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference both mentally and physically. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef on only one of the beef days. You need high protein in the beef the other days.

Instead of coffee or tea use a grain beverage. A very good fasting tea is a combination of nettles, chickweed and fennel seed which also helps in weight reduction. There are many excellent green drinks and soya protein powders that can be used to supplement as needed and replace meat. To keep the weight off, replace one meal a day with soup, eat more vegetables.

Finish each meal with a bowl of soup. Avoid all those no-noʼs. Avoid diet sodaʼs and diet chemicals. Use real butter not the hypo- hydrated fakes . Do not use foods with high fructose sugars do not use aspartame or artificial sweeteners, Use natural whole foods, like stevia, agava, honey.

Eat good wholesome foods that are well prepared and that appeal to you.
