The One That Got Away!

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

This summer has been a truck load of fun for us. After surviving a road trip we had the confidence to hit the road and have fun with the kids. One adventure was a trip to PEI. This trip consisted of some huge disappointments but also some more “new things” with the kids. I will share a couple of the disappointments but then end on a good note. PEI is not a bad place.

Our first night we stayed in an over priced hotel room that was cramped and outdated and had a toilet so close to the wall your butt hit ceramic every trip. They also tried to tell us that the pool was closed for mainenance until checkout time… Yeah likely, we went swimming! Yes that was disappointing.

We experienced what it was like to encounter road rage in a MacDonalds parking lot. Those dollar ice coffees are not that fantastic that we should tolerate that so we didn’t stick around. The man actually jumped out of his truck yelling at us because we were driving parking lot speed. Very disappointing and not the fault of the island. As we drove away Trey says, ” are we not going to Happy Donalds because that guy was too mean?” Pretty much!

Then there was the fishing incident. Now it wasn’t a total disappointment, in fact, it was a lot of fun. the kids had never fished before so it was a neatthing to try with them. Trey caught a fish, Papa caught a fish… It was my turn to catch one. I was getting annoyed with Dija because she was trying to wander off with other families and not stay with us. I waited and it happened… One mother of a fish was on my line! It really was large and a little difficult to reel in, I had it, I had it, “net, get the net, someone get a net!” I look over my shoulder to see why nobody was getting me the net. Oh yes, I forgot that is more important to get the iPhone and take pictures first while thet fish goes under the warf and off my hook. I was a little annoyed for a minute but as I saw the other family haul away the big fish it occurred to me that they had to eat all that fish. I wasn’t going home to fill my deep freeze. I was camping. I don’t think it was strategic on Corey’s part but it was good that thte big one got away. I stuffed those suckers with lemon and herbs and tossed them on the grill for supper. I’ve never done that before either! The week on the island consisted of several trips to the beach in great weather and not so great weather. We picked beach glass, ran on sandbars, walked in the ocean, talked to a big parrot sitting on his perch, hid from the sun, walked to the lighthouse… Difficult not to enjoy all that just a two minute walk from the cottage. Fresh veggies daily from the farm market stands nearby and day trips to other parts of the island were highlights. Oh flying a kite on the crazy windy day when nobody was on the beach was a fun adventure too. Picnic in a tent on the beach then digging big holes and flying a kite. Great day. Great trip!

Day 9 & 10

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I realize I left a few people hanging but I’ve been collecting material all summer! My apologies for neglecting the blogging but I have been having a ton of fun with the kids and simply haven’t taken the time to sit and write. No regrets here. I will get back on track now though.

The final days of our Road trip in June left us with tired kids and tired Neenee and Papa. Our last night we rolled into Moncton and crashed. Our new adventure on day 9 was breakfast at MacDonalds with a play place. Now I wish I could tell you how great that was. First of all breakfast is about all I can handle there. Secondly, if Dija is tired just don’t take her anywhere. So the reward of the play was not enough to keep her in her seat and sensible… Papa ended up taking her to her car seat while Trey got to play a few minutes. He couldn’t wait to go climbing in one of those things again! (in a later entry I promise!)

We had a few things to do in Moncton before hitting the trail for home. We were ahead of schedule so we took our time and meandered a bit. Part way home I called Nana to tell her we would be arriving home that evening… Well she mustbhave missed us. Of course we would love to come for dinner. I recommend this for everyone. When arriving home after vacation have a Nana waiting for you with dinner!

Day 10 was recovery day. It was a long drive and we were all happy to be home but all in all it was a fantastic road trip. Nothing went wrong, we didn’t get lost, we didn’t need to feed noisy Dija to the bears along side of the road, nobody peed their pants in the van… You get the idea, it was all good. We survived Road trip 2011. This just meant we wanted to go some more – all summer!
